I know a lot of you are probably shaking your heads thinking “why in the world would I want to go bowling”? Most of you probably associate bowling as the Friday night factory crowd getting together for a few games of bowling. You know the ones with the standard bowling shirts, gloves, shoes, and custom-made balls, for a loud and rowdy game or three of bowling.

You have in your mind the beer drinking, happy-go-lucky Al Bundy types having a fun night at the bowling alley! Seniors can go out and have a fun night too, or maybe an afternoon with some other senior couples. Remember, we are doing this mainly for our health and the opportunity to associate and visit with some like-minded people. Beer is not needed unless you want a couple.

Ladies! When was the last time your husband ask you out for a night of bowling? I know, if you are like my wife, she looks at me with one of those, “are you crazy looks,” like I am from Mars. A lot of men bowled when they were young and during their working years.

It seems that women did not bowl much when they were young. It was always a man thing, and I don’t blame the ladies, because it usually involved a lot of beer drinking, cigar smoking and just a good ole boy time. But, as our society has changed so has the game of bowling.

The way things are now you don’t have to go out on Friday night and get involved with the Friday night bowlers. There are many bowling alleys in different cities all across our Nation that have Senior Leagues. If it is something you would like to do, you can check into joining a Senior League, where you pay a set league fee, which could include shoes and balls and any other expenses associated with the game.

You and your husband could join up, with other couples and share in the cost of the bowling fees. Couples bowling is the least expensive way to do things, and a lot of these leagues have coaching available to help you along if needed. Most of these Senior Leagues meet for afternoon bowling. Coffee, drinks, and donuts are usually provided.

If you didn’t want to go out with the crowd, you and your spouse could go alone for an afternoon of fun, or just with another couple.

Another thing is to be conscious of the rules and regulation. Find bowling shoes that fit correctly and do not slip. The lanes are oiled so avoid stepping over the foul line, as you might slip and fall. Be aware of people bowling on either side of you, wait until they have launched their ball before you start your approach. Learn the rules of the game and go over them again so you can make the most out of your play.

An afternoon of bowling can be fun and it is always good to get out of the house, have some fun with friends or make it a fun day with your spouse.
