Staying Healthy as You Age can be difficult as one gets older, but it is one of the most important things you can do for yourself in your senior days! Some have a lot of problems as they age. Others do well and live out their Golden Years in relatively good health. As all of you know, how your health is in your senior years is all dependent on how you lived your younger years. But, no matter what kind of health issues you face in your senior years, you have to know how to prevent them from getting worse.
There are four significant issues we face in our senior years, and I think I have found ways to prevent them from becoming major problems. Most of us face financial and health issues as we age. I would like to talk to you a little about each one and how I think the best way to deal with them.
Staying Healthy Nutrition
We all know having the proper diet in our old age is very important. The greasy hamburgers, french fries and the Monster drinks we consumed when we were young, no longer work. Our kidneys, stomach and the ole colon don’t quite work like they used to. Staying healthy means we all have to set aside time to prepare good healthy meals. There is plenty of research out there about the kinds of food that are healthy and the ones that are not. The problem seems to be, most of us are too busy in our ordinary lives to take the time to do it.
We would all like to swing thru the drive-thru and pick up that hamburger and soda. Here are some recommended fruits and veggies for seniors:
- Bright orange vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin
- Tomatoes and tomato products (sauce, paste, and puree), and red sweet pepper
- Leafy greens such as spinach, collards, turnip greens, kale, beef and mustard green, green leaf lettuce and romaine lettuce
It’s best for seniors to avoid:
- Soft Cheeses
- Raw Meat
- Oysters, clams, and mussels
- Raw eggs
- Unpasteurized milk and juice
It is best if you can prepare all your meals naturally in your kitchen and avoid those TV dinners altogether! For more on this Click Here!
Easy Exercise for Seniors
Not unless you have exercised all your life, an intense workout is not recommended for seniors. Staying active and trying to keep moving as much as you can is crucial in your older years. Regular exercise can help prevent heart disease, diabetes, some forms of cancer, and when you keep those hands and legs moving in can slow the onset of arthritis.
There are many types of exercise listed on Google (do a Google search on the subject) for seniors, and you will find many websites that have recommendations for the workouts a senior should be doing. Once again you want to check to see what is suitable for your age and what kind of physical condition you are.
Just wanted to put in an extra comment here – my Father in Law passed away a couple of weeks ago, he was 96 years young. He attended the Friday dances at the Senior Center, the only time he missed one was if he was in the hospital, toward the end of his life. He also walked, slowly, on his treadmill daily. I firmly believe this is what kept him in shape and why he lived as long as he did. He stayed active as long and as much as he could, up until his death.
There are many publications, books, and articles about the importance of keeping the brain active, all your life. You can get short courses or ebooks on how to improve your Memory, Attention, Brain Speed, Intelligence, and Navigation. These are essential for the prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia.
Get Active – An active life keeps the brain healthy. Study after study has been conducted about the benefits of staying active and how it helps the brain. Cognitive impairment is the condition in which thinking and memory skills deteriorate; this is a mild form of Dementia. We all know about the terrible effects of Alzheimer’s. People who are active socially, intellectually and physically may slow the onset of Alzheimer’s.
Being active does not mean you need to do 60 minutes of intense aerobic activity, seven days a week. One can start out 15 minutes per day and work your way up. The important thing is to do it on a schedule as many days per week that you can. Exercise is always good, at any level for alertness and to rebuild those worn out brain cells.
Financial Freedom – Financial Independence
What do we mean when we say Financial Freedom or Financial Independence. Financial Freedom to a Baby Boomer may mean never having to work again. It is the freedom to be who you are and do what you have always dreamed of doing in your younger days. Most all of us have worked all our lives, putting other people first. Financial Freedom means to finally be able to put yourself first, live where you want, take the vacations you have always thought about, or visit the people you have not seen in a while.
Financial Independence means you have the money and time to do all the above, plus have money left over. A good example would be, if you made $4,000 per month from dividend stocks or bonds that you had, and your expenses were only $3,000 per month, you could be considered to be Financial Independent. If someone generates enough income from other sources, besides working or social security, they have achieved Financial Independence.
Most of us have worked many years to live our senior years, in happiness doing the things we have all dreamed. The trouble nowadays, many of us are not going to be able to do it for many reasons. As our Nation and the World keeps getting further and further into debt, it has come to the point that you cannot depend on the government. They have not and will not be able to provide you with a good retirement income.
Finish reading through my conclusion below, and you will see how to attain the life you desired for your Golden Years!
As our Nation gets more and more populated, people are getting tired of fighting the traffic to get to and from work. A lot of the Baby Boomers still have to work for companies that don’t appreciate their work, or because you are a good employee, they take advantage of you and want you to work all the time with no increase in pay.
As I have talked about we need to eat correctly, stay fit, keep our brains focused, have the money we need for a peaceful and less stressful retirement.
I have found a Work From Home opportunity that will, with some work give you the retirement that you have dreamed!
I think this is especially important for Baby Boomers and those that are taking care of an elderly parent or friend. Wealthy Affiliate is a way to supplement your income.
